Будучи организатором фестиваля Tokyo Crossover Jazz и уже на протяжении 20 лет владельцем успешного токийского клуба “The Room”, Шуя Окино вносит неоценимый вклад в развитие музыкального вкуса не только японских слушателей. Его имя широко известно во всем мире. Прежде всего, он знаком нашим слушателям по Kyoto Jazz Massive. На этот раз Шуя Окино привозит совершенно новый проект. Команда состоит из 11 человек. можно смело назвать лучшим джазовым коллективом планеты на сегодняшний день, в чем уже не раз могли убедиться зрители фестиваля “JAZZYSTAN”. Их музыка божественна и прекрасна. Совершенно не случайно музыканты приглашены на “JAZZYSTAN” уже третий год подряд. Всего в ее составе 9 человек. В этом году команда готовит к выпуску уже второй по счету альбом (Всего их уже порядка девяти!) и стоит отметить, что каждый год японские музыканты не перестают удивлять. Они просто не способны играть стандарты. Если вы намерены их услышать впервые, можете быть уверены, вы запомните их выступление на всю оставшуюся жизнь!

Выступление квартета на сцене фестиваля “JAZZYSTAN” в марте этого года можно без преувеличения назвать триумфальным. Оно вызвало невероятную бурю восторженных откликов и эмоций, и конечно же, пожелания зрителей фестиваля увидеть их снова, не могли быть не учтены. Намерение австралийцев вернуться в Казахстан было с большой радостью поддержано! Музыканты готовы представить программу из песен, ранее не звучавших на фестивале. Несомненно, все мы в большом предвкушении. Electric Empire сумели вернуть музыке искреннее тепло и любовь, чего так часто не хватает музыке сегодня. Среди больших поклонников группы создатели радиостанции британской радиостанции Jazz Fm, не говоря уже об отдельных радио передачах, посвященных соул, джазу и фанку на радио каналах BBC.

ALMATY – DJ and broadcaster Rustam Ospanov (Rustam Ospanoff) is an ardent lover of music. In 2009, he organized the first Jazzystan International Music Festival, followed by another seven over the past three years. In an interview with The Astana Times he speaks about the ambitious goals of the festivals, future plans and his passion for music.

What is Jazzystan?

Jazzystan is a unique event. I have been steadily working on it over the last few years, trying to attract an audience. For several years now, various bands from the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, France, Germany, Australia and many other countries have been performing on the Jazzystan stage in Almaty. We do not consider the event as a festival only for jazz and therefore we invite musicians playing high quality music of different styles, including jazz, Latin, Brazilian, soul, funk, hip-hop, disco, and house music.

So it is not without pride that I note that this is the only music festival in our country today that attracts so many listeners and viewers. We are incredibly excited at the fact that the festival grows with each year. The next concert will be the eighth of the past three years since Jazzystan’s inception.

Another feature of Jazzystan is the fact that for many people it is not just a musical event, but also a meeting place for friends.

What is especially nice about the event is that the main audience of the festival is modern urban intellectuals, businessmen and creative people. Moreover, our concerts attract more and more guests from the CIS region and abroad, who come to Almaty specifically for the concert.

At present, the festival takes place much more frequently than before. Over the past three months we have already had two concerts and are preparing for a third, which is unprecedented, especially in today’s context. It takes us incredible work and sacrifice sometimes; however, I firmly believe that at the present stage we are doing everything right.

On May 25-26, we will have musicians from the U.S., Japan and a number of European countries performing at Jazzystan, including Soil & Pimp Sessions, Shuya Okino Live Band and two famous American singers invited to participate in the project: Navasha Daya and N’Dea Daven port (ex Brand New Heavies).

In the next few months, we will be preparing other concerts with the participation of international celebrities. And we have set the date for one of the concerts for September 22.

Could you tell more about the origin of the festival?

Jazzystan was established in 2009. I organized my first concert on October 15, and we invited Bah Samba, Kyoto Jazz Massive featuring Tasita D’Mour & Vanessa Freeman, and The Magic of Nomads. It became obvious then that the city really needed this festival. All the tickets were sold out in a few hours before the festival.

That year I set a clear goal and worked hard to accomplish the things that I came up with. At that time I also realised how important it is to meet your goals and stay focused on your business. Therefore now I continue to believe that I am accomplishing a certain mission, and it is very important for me.

In 2010, the festival was divided into two concerts that were held on October 1 and 2 and December 4. The autumn concert took place in the Almaty Towers Centre, while in the winter it was held in the ball room of the Hotel Kazakhstan. A total of nearly 4,500 viewers attended the festival that year. Among the guests were Jazzanova featuring Paul Randolph, Soil & Pimp Sessions, J.A.M, Kyoto Jazz Massive featuring Tasita D’Mour & Vanessa Freeman, Gilles Peterson & Earl Zinger, Nik “Nippon” Weston, Shuya Okino and others.

In 2011, Almaty Towers again hosted Jazzystan, which was held under the motto “Pray for Japan. We Are ONE” with the participation of the best three soul, jazz, and funk bands from Tokyo, Soil & Pimp, Root Soul & Quasimode. In December 2011, a soul icon of the United Kingdom, Omar, and Kazakhstan audience’s favourite trio from the United States, Tortured Soul, were invited.

This year, Jazzystan took place on February 14 in the ballroom of the Hotel Kazakhstan and was opened by a renowned band from the United Kingdom, Reel People Sound System. A young Kazakh music group, Some Toir, performed as well.

On March 9, we had perhaps one of the best concerts, with the participation of a soul musician from the United States, Darien, who despite coming without his team still managed to warm up the audience before the brilliant performance of the Australian team Electric Empire. Both Darien and Electric Empire raised a storm of applause and brought many positive emotions to the audience.

What role could the Festival play in the branding of Almaty?

My team and I are going to organise a number of large cultural events that may in a short period of time bring great benefits for the city and popularise Kazakhstan in the world. We look at things globally and make our plans globally. Therefore, it goes without saying that we are very interested in finding people among our sponsors and partners who have the same spirit of enthusiasm. We intend to create large-scale projects. One of our key priorities is to expand the scale of the Festival and make it popular not only in Kazakhstan, but also abroad. What is important here is not so much the brand of Jazzystan itself, but our intention to turn the country into an attractive destination, primarily for ourselves, and, of course, for those who come to stay in our country for a short time. So we are speaking about branding the city or the entire country. Music is a wonderful tool that can help us.

The project has the potential to contribute to the improvement of urban infrastructure and the promotion of tourism. It may well become a brand identity of the country. Today, many people are traveling around the world and are making their plans in advance, defining the date and place of their future visit, reviewing the cultural programme. After all, our country is not worse than Indonesia, Latvia, or countries of the Caucasus, where projects like Jazzystan are always supported and funded by sponsors and the government.

At the moment, we are continuing our work and successfully cooperating with our present partners, among whom are a number of major international companies. We efficiently use our tools in advertising, PR and social networks. Each concert gathers large numbers of people. In fact, Almaty needs an additional concert hall that meets modern standards for the organisation of the festival.

The Jazzystan project sets rather ambitious goals. Has it become profitable?

This year the festival finally moved to another level and is becoming more profitable. We’re going to use this potential by uniting our efforts with business partners.

Do you make any charitable contributions?

All money raised through ticket sales of our first concert was sent to pay for university educations for gifted children who graduated from boarding schools supervised by the Sabi Charitable Foundation. In May 2011, having organized a concert with the assistance and support of the company JTI Kazakhstan, we raised nearly 4 million tenge to help victims of the natural disaster in Japan.

Now we are working to ensure that our young people have access to musical master classes, which will promote personal growth through their acquaintance with the cultural heroes of our time. We started selecting candidates in March. From April 22 to May 26, we are inviting world-class music professionals to give master classes in the afternoons and evenings. Our main concert will be held in the Almaty Towers, the same place where a charity festival took place last year.

What does music mean to you?

Music gives me the opportunity to grow as a professional and a profound awareness of the responsibility for everything that happens in my life. Whatever we do, we should always remember that we are all united. I deliberately choose those people who carry light into the world with the help of music. As a rule, they are not only great musicians, but also have distinguished charisma and a permanent state of happiness that they, like me, share with others.

When organizing the festival, I feel the inspiration, support and love of the audience, and their gratitude. These are the people from completely different generations, their ages range from 20 to 60. They often admit that after visiting our concerts they change their attitude towards life. I believe that music can change our lives and the way we think.

4 April 2012. Such a beautiful day. We woke up at 05.50 and moved very quickly between few stations to get to Tokyo Station for Shinkansen trip to Kyoto. That was funny to see how we and other japanese people are running between lines to get to the point of destination in time. It was fantastic sunny weather after hurricane while we were leaving Tokyo. Hope we will have the same weather on Friday when we come back again.

Shuya Okino was meeting us on the Kyoto station and the start of our journey was fantastic! We visited few temples (including Shuya’s favorite one with a thousand of buddhas!) – Sanjyu sangendo and Kiyomizudera. Few minutes later we were “re-born” after visiting temple with absolutely dark room (amazing experience! love it!).

We also tried the smoke of spiritual fire and drinked healing water (feeling great now!). We had a nice walk in the streets of Kyoto with Shuya & his beautiful wife Joanne and went to the secret Shuya’s favorite restaurant with extremely new taste of food for me (wonderful!).

Hotel is great! It’s funny, this time I stay in Tokyo opposite the TV Tower. The same story is here! I can see Kyoto TV Tower from the window, we are on the 12th floor). Nice hotel which was booked by my brother Almas Dissyukov (GIANT THANKS!). Shuya said we are lucky, because normally the room is 2-3 times more expensive than it is for us today.

Now we just came to the room for one hour and leaving back to visit Kyoto TV Tower, some record shops for some rare japanese jazz, brazilian stuff/ temples (again!), restaurant (hope we will visit “Giro Giro!”), bars and to walk in amazing ancient streets of Kyoto!

Looking forward to have a dinner with Satoshi Shacho Kushima, Yuichi Sorita on Friday (hope to see other guys too!) By the way I heard DJs Spen & Karizma are in Tokyo this Friday, 6 April and it’s good, because I can really go and listen/dance to them before our party which will have a place on 4月7日（ sat ）SPUNKY!! ＠ Shibuya the room with Takahiro Matzz Matsuoka Quasimode ! I will play on this party as well! Next week we are going to listen to Dimitri From Paris, DJ Premier, Jazzy Sport Crew and of course will make Kyoto Jazz Massive: Sound Sanctuary with Shuya Okino & Shacho!

On Sunday we are going for Hanami in one of the gardens of Tokyo with Sakura in full blossom (by the way we are really lucky, because Sakura started to burst into blossom in Kyoto today!) Hope to meet new friends among people from Kazakhstan who stay in Japan. Blessings to everyone!
